October ASNCOC Events: Coffee and Advocacy

Happy October! Get your fall off to a great start with this month's ASNCOC (Autism Society of North Carolina Orange Chatham) events. On the schedule for October are the monthly coffee gathering and a can't-miss presentation by ECAC. All events are free and open to the public.

Here are the details:

Join us for conversation and a pumpkin spice latte!

Coffee Gathering:

When: Friday, October 11th from 10 - 11am
Where: Caribou Coffee on the corner of Franklin & Estes Streets, Chapel Hill
What: Join us in the back meeting room for coffee and casual conversation. The coffee gatherings are a great chance to meet parents, grandparents, and others who care about someone on the autism spectrum. We look forward to seeing new faces and old friends!

Chapter Meeting: ECAC Presentation - Becoming Your Child's Best and Most Effective Advocate:

When: Tuesday, October 15th from 7 - 9pm
Where: Extraordinary Ventures 200 South Elliott Road, Chapel Hill (across from Whole Foods)
What: "Becoming Your Child's Best and Most Effective Advocate" presentation by ECAC (Exceptional Children's Assistance Center)

Download the flyer in English or Spanish.

This workshop is for parents and families of children with disabilities and special needs (any special needs, not just autism). Learn about:

* How to become your child's best advocate
* IDEA '04 and other important laws
* Communicating effectively with your child's teacher and other professionals
* Tips for successful meetings
* Keeping records and much more

This was one of the first workshops I ever attended, and it is excellent - every parent whose child has an IEP, 504, or special needs should attend! The workshop is free and open to everyone, but R.s.v.p.s are requested. Free childcare is being offered by UNC Autism Outreach - please be sure to note if you need childcare. Register at asncoc@gmail.com.

Spanish interpretation will also be available by advance request. The deadline to request interpretation is Friday, October 11th. Please note that the interpreter will only attend the meeting if she has been requested. To R.s.v.p. for the Spanish interpreter, contact Mariela Maldonado at the Autism Society of North Carolina at (919) 865-5066 or mmaldonado@autismsociety-nc.org.

Looking forward to seeing all of you at these great October events. Don't forget that there is also still time to jump into two exciting October fundraisers coming up soon. Stay tuned for an exciting announcement in the near future about a new offering at CHART!
