September ASNCOC Events

Can you believe that it is almost September? Once school is back in session, ASNCOC (Autism Society of North Carolina Orange Chatham) gets back into full swing too. During the school year there are typically two monthly events: one morning coffee gathering and either an educational evening chapter meeting or a weekend family event. All events are free and open to the public.

Here is what is coming up for September:

Coffee Gathering:

When: Friday, September 13th (yup, Friday the 13th!) from 10 - 11am
Where: Caribou Coffee on the corner of Franklin & Estes Streets, Chapel Hill
What: Join us in the back meeting room for coffee and casual conversation. The coffee gatherings are a great chance to meet parents, grandparents, and others who care about someone on the autism spectrum. We look forward to seeing new faces and old friends!

Chapter Meeting:

When: Tuesday, September 17th at 7pm
Where: Extraordinary Ventures, 200 South Elliott Road (across from the Whole Foods shopping plaza), Chapel Hill
What: "Sexuality and Autism", presented by Mary Van Bourgondien, Ph.D. Dr. Van Bourgondien is the Clinical Director of the Chapel Hill TEACCH Center, and has written on the sensitive subject of sexuality and the autism spectrum. If your child is a teen, tween, or young adult, you do not want to miss this important presentation!

Childcare is often provided for the evening chapter meetings. Please follow ASNOC on Yahoo or Facebook for upcoming details on this event, including how to R.s.v.p. if childcare is offered.

ASNCOC has a great line up of events planned for the fall! Future topics for chapter meetings include an ECAC workshop called "Becoming Your Child's Best and Most Effective Advocate" (I have attended this one before, and it is excellent) and a Behavior Management presentation presented by local behavior expert Tracy Vail of Let's Talk. If your child has behaviors, you will definitely want to attend Tracy's training. It will be a great event for teachers, therapists, and your child's caregivers as well. More details to come soon!
