2 New Fall Classes for Parents and Kids with Autism

There are quite a few interesting classes this fall for parents of children with autism and for the kids themselves. Two new ones crossed our desk that we wanted to share with you:

You Are a Mind Reader Social Skills Group

Based on Michelle Garcia Winner's Social Thinking Curriculum, this group is for elementary school children with high functioning autism / Asperger's. The class is offered through Chapel Hill Parks and Rec, and will be taught by Dr. Susan Moschos, Nationally Certified School Psychologist for Durham Public Schools and Ruth Morgan, M.S., CCC-SLP, a speech language pathologist for Chapel-Hill Carrboro City Schools. children with high functioning autism / Asperger's. Group members will develop their perspective taking and social communication skills in a fun, engaging setting.

Dates: Tuesdays, September 10th - October 15th
Location: Chapel Hill Public Library
Times: K-2nd grade class: 5-6:15pm - Class #330632A
               3-5th grade class: 6:30-8pm - Class #330632B

Cost: $180 for Orange County residents / $200 for non-residents

There are no scholarships available, but families of children with developmental disabilities may be able to apply for funding through Central Carolina First In Families. Visit our Grants page for details.

Raising Special Kids: A Group Program for Parents of Children Recently Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder

This group is for parents of children diagnosed with autism within the last two years. Based on the Raising Special Kids program, it is designed to help parents adjust emotionally to raising a special child, meet others in a similar situation, improve family communications, and develop skills to help their children reach their optimal potential. Class facilitators are Sherry Mergner, MSW, LCSW (instructor of a series of Social Thinking classes for parents this fall) and Ann Palmer, B.A., author of several excellent books about autism.

Dates: Fridays, September 27th - November 22nd (no class October 25th)
Location: Estes Office Park, 104 South Estes Drive, suite 206, Chapel Hill
Time: 9-11am
Cost: $180

No fee reductions are available, but participants may be eligible to apply for assistance through First In Families or the Rossi Fund. Details about both are on our Grants page.
