Orange County Schools Autism Connections Series

Families of students with autism in Orange County Schools are invited to attend the free Autism Connection series. Teachers and school staff are also welcome, as are parents of students with other disabilities.

Session 1: Wednesday, January 16, 2013 3:15 pm - 4:30 pm

Autism-Related Research in Orange County Schools – What’s Going On and What Do We Know So Far?

In this session, participants will learn more about research related to autism that is taking place in Orange County Schools. Researchers from UNC and Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute will share information about projects they have completed and preliminary results. Plans for future studies and the potential benefits for students will also be discussed.

Session 2: Thursday, February 21, 2013 3:00pm – 6:00 pm

iPads and Autism

Guest presenter Amy Perry from the Autism Society of North Carolina will provide an introduction to the iPad which covers all the basics: iPads, why they work well for kids with Autism, how to keep your kids safe on the Internet, how to keep the iPad safe, a brief overview of some apps, how and where to find apps, how to install them, general iPad tips and tricks on operation and maintenance. There is also a brief overview of Android Tablets with a discussion of that platform with its similarities/differences.

*Seating is limited for this session, so advanced registration is required. Parents will be given priority; school staff will be placed on a wait list and admitted as space allows. Registration deadline for this session is Friday, February 15. *

Session 3: March – date and time TBA

Navigating Services: How to Get from Here to There

In this session, staff from the Autism Society of North Carolina will share information with families and staff about the services that are offered through the county and/or state. There will be a specific discussion of the Innovations waiver (formerly called the CAP-I/DD waiver - Community Alternative Program for persons with Intellectual or other Developmental Disabilities), who qualifies, how it is administered and what services it entails. A broad overview of other services available through the state, such as Vocational Rehabilitation and Crisis Services, will also be covered.
