Update on Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools Redistricting
As many of you know, Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools will be opening a new elementary school next fall. What that means for children throughout the CHCCS district is re-districting. The district has already released the walk zone for Elementary 11, now named Northside Elementary. This week they released 4 proposals for the entire re-districting plan. Each plan also has a list of pros and cons, with two of the primary concerns being relieving overcrowding in individual schools and achieving a reasonable balance of socio-economic and test score results.
The 4 re-districting plans are available to view online. They can be a little tough to interpret, but a good place to start is by opening Folder 4, which contains the maps of the plans and the pros and cons of each one. Start by reviewing the Segment List to find the number of the planning segment for your neighborhood. From there you can look at the 4 different maps to see in which elementary district your segment would be zoned under the 4 proposed plans. To the best of my understanding, the areas with the red cross hatch lines are walk zones for the various elementary schools.
The district is seeking input on re-districting before making the final plan, so be sure to contribute. You can make a comment on their website here or plan to attend one of the public forums. Dates for the public hearings are:
Monday, December 3, 2012 from 7 - 10 pm at Carrboro High School Auditorium
Wednesday, December 12, 2012 from 7 - 10 pm at Chapel Hill High School Auditorium
There are also upcoming Board of Education meetings about the re-districting process:
Thursday, December 20, 2012 at 7 pm - Work session at Lincoln Center
Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 7 pm - Discussion and Action at Town of Chapel Hill Town Hall
Be sure to make your comments and concerns heard, and to thank the Board of Education for their careful attention to this very important task.
